1   As subject-questions são frases interrogativas que perguntam pela identidade do sujeito. Não existe inversão do verbo e a ordem das palavras é igual à de uma frase declarativa:

  2   Consideremos a frase seguinte na interrogativa directa do tipo subject:
 
He asked, "Who broke the vase?"
 
 
Para convertê-la em interrogativa indirecta, siga os seguintes passos:
 
(a) comece por:
 
He asked ...
 
 
(b) introduza o pronome pessoal me (como opção):
 
He asked (me) ...
 
 
(c) adicione o advérbio who da interrogativa directa:
 
He asked (me) who ...
 
 
(d) recue o tempo verbal para o passado:
 
He asked (me) who had broken ...
 
 
(e) adicione o resto da frase da interrogativa directa:
 
He asked (me) who had broken the vase
 
 
(f) termine a frase com ponto final:
 
He asked (me) who had broken the vase.
 
 
NOTA: Repare na ausência dos recursos gráficos na interrogativa indirecta (que são somente empregues na interrogativa directa): a vírgula (,), as aspas ("...") e o ponto de interrogação (?).
